Hair and Beauty
The Hair and Beauty Salon opened in September 2008 providing students with the opportunity to gain a City and Guilds qualification in Salon Services. The course gives a valuable insight into the Hair and Beauty industry and provides an opportunity to develop basic skills and to gain relevant industrial knowledge of working in a modern salon. The Salon has built up a regular client base from the community, giving students the opportunity to practice their skills on live clients.
The salon comprises of ten well equipped work stations and three back washes as well as the usual hospitality area expected in a modern salon.

This two year course comprises seven broad areas of study
The units covered are:
- Finding out about customer service in the salon;
- Basic salon reception duties;
- Personal presentation in the salon;
- Following health and safety practice in the salon;
- Hair and beauty industry and occupation awareness;
- Introduction to hairdressing services;
- Introduction to basic perming and colouring;
- Apply basic make-up;
- Provide basic manicure.
Method of assessment
Practical observation. Written assignment, marked against City & Guilds criteria. Students will compile a portfolio of written and practical evidence to demonstrate their competence.Students can continue with a Hair and Beauty courses at New College to increase their skills and qualifications.
