Performing & Creative Arts
Art
Art is a fun, creative and dynamic subject, taught within Creative and Performing Arts. Students are taught how to work as Artists, Craftspeople and Designers. Students are also given the opportunity to develop their use of different techniques, processes and mediums. Art offers learners of all abilities the chance to achieve communication of ideas and meanings through a multi-sensory approach.
KS3
In Years 7, 8 and 9 students receive one lesson per week of Art. Students are taught a wide range of disciplines, from photography to creating sculptures and art forms with recycled materials. Art helps to develop confidence through using both new and traditional media. Students learn to appreciate art and crafts from many different times, cultures and societies. They critically reflect on both their artwork and the work of others. Students’ Art lessons help to promote happy, positive attitudes towards creativity and the art world.
KS4
In Years 10 and 11 students receive at least 2 lessons per week and are also expected to attend at least 1 or 2 after school sessions per week. Again students are taught a wide range of disciplines, from printmaking to digital media handling. A more personalised approach is adopted towards their learning. Students are given a vast range of opportunities, from working with artists, designers and craftspeople to visiting museums and galleries. The curriculum is designed to promote creativity and develop the student’s awareness of the countless opportunities within the art field.
GCSE Exam success is excellent within Art. For the last 2 years running the GCSE pass rate has been over 90%, making it not only an enjoyable subject but a successful subject. We hold a GCSE Art Exhibition each year in June/July, which is a great success!
Art and the Community
Developing links with the community helps students to see Art in a different context, outside the classroom. We have worked with Deerness Day Care Centre and painted a mural in their cloakroom.

We have produced large-scale oil paintings based on cells for Sacriston Health Centre. One of our talented GCSE Artists won the last Christmas Card Competition for MP. Roberta Blackman-Woods. All County Durham Schools entered, GCSE and A-Level students - what an achievement!
