People and Culture
Introduction to P & C
People and Culture at DCBC encompasses many subjects, from humanities (geography, history and religious studies) to citizenship, Modern Foreign Languages, L 2 L and careers.
We are a bright and friendly area which likes to promote positive attitudes and behaviour. Throughout the subjects we use a variety of learning styles and thinking skills to encourage an enquiring mind and interesting learning experiences. Staff are welcoming and approachable and ensure that students are cared for in a safe environment.
Religious Studies
KS3
In Religious Studies lessons we promote tolerance and respectfulness. Students look at great leaders, world religions and inventing religions. Throughout Years 7, 8 and 9, students complete projects using ICT and develop confidence through presentations.KS4
In Years 10 & 11 all students embark upon a GCSE in Religious Studies; either a full or short course. We look at moral issues and how they affect individual people. Students are encouraged to have discussions and develop their own opinions whilst comparing the views of other religions.Eco Schools
At present we have achieved the Silver and Bronze awards and are now aiming for Green Flag status. Both students and staff are involved in this through various Eco groups and gardening clubs within college. We have a whole school ethos which promotes sustainability by caring for each other, the environment and ourselves. Students are currently developing a study garden, which will also be used as a story telling garden for our local on-site Nursery.
Citizenship
KS3
All students take part in citizenship lessons throughout their time at college. Within this subject personal, social and sexual well being are discussed and taught.KS4
Students look at issues within the world such as drugs, sex and other topics that affect young people. We make full use of newspapers and online news and film to encourage and promote discussion. In years 10 and 11 we are beginning to introduce a full and short course at GCSE level.
Student Council
Within college we have a very active Student Council which is at the heart of our decision making process. Students are elected by their fellow students or can be co-opted by the Student Council. The Council develops new ideas within college and is involved in charity events, lesson observations, Student Nutrition Action Group groups and even chooses the colour of paint within classrooms. The Council is an effective way of ensuring all students have a voice and are heard.
