Transition
There are probably few decisions more important than choosing the best secondary school for your child. Clearly their future happiness, academic success and future life chances may depend on making the right choice.
We believe that a student’s ability to enjoy and achieve is best enhanced by a smooth transition between Key Stages. We need to sustain in our young people an enthusiasm for learning, confidence in themselves as learners and a sense of achievement and purpose. It is therefore important that transition is well planned, in stages and that we should not expect new students to cope with a huge change in teaching organisation and style all at once. Learning in the new institution needs to build on what the student has achieved in their primary school.
Through building relationships with our partner primary schools we are able to ensure we get to know our future students from as early as Key Stage 1.
We dedicate a large number of days in our school calendar to transition and students from our partner primary schools will visit to participate in a number of exciting events and use our specialist facilities.
We also feel as well as getting to know our future students it is important to build early relationships with parents and carers. We do this through holding celebration evenings that follow our transition days. This allows parents and carers to meet key members of staff as well as seeing what brilliant work their child has done on their visit to The Durham Federation.
We would be delighted to talk about Primary / Secondary transition with you and you are always welcome to visit our colleges.
